Default set number of times to change secondary?

is there a set number of times you can change secondary profession? i was talking to a guy who kept making different characters (with different professions) just to unlock skills for his pvp character, but couldn't you just keep changing your secondary profession and unlock them that way?

If you want to change secondary professions and gain enough skill points to buy all the skills, then you probably have too much time on your hands, or you are crazy. Probably both. The best way to get new skills is through quests, which can only be re-done on a new character.

Arkayne - not always true. There are quite a lot of quest's that are specifically class related and will come up when you change your secondary profession.

Yes you can't re-do every quest, and the number of quest's that are class specific are small, but they do exist - ie For example, the quest's that Master Ranger Nente will give you.. these only appear if your primary or secondary class is Ranger. This means if you were say a E/Mo and swapped to a E/R he'd then start offering you a few quests whereas he offered you nothing as an E/Mo. Another example is the Necromancer, Elementalist & Mesmer in Yak's Bend - they will offer class specifdic quest's.. if you swap secondaries to one of them, they will have a quest for you to do.

There are npc's all around that offer class specific quest's like this. So when you swap secondaries, it always pays to go back and check all the npc's in the game as some of them are likely offering you new quest's that give you skills.. quest's that weren't on offer as you didn't have the right profession.

My-Excuse - yes you can swap secondaries as many times as you want. The problem is there are a LOT of skills that are offered on the main/major quest's that you won't get access to if you swap secondaries. While you will get access to a selection of quest's that are specific to the profession you just swapped to, you will be unable to re-do any of the quest's you have already done.. which means any skills that were unlocked for the new profession that were gotten from those skills will ONLY be accessable by using a Skill Trainer.

These "main" quest's are offered to every profession and give skills relevant to those professions. IE for example all my character's have gotten access to a quest in PockmarkFlats / Eastern Frontier given by Cynn.. the quest is to save a caravan. Now I always get the same Monk skill (as my chars are all /Mo) but my Elementalist got Fireball there, my Necromancer got something different, etc. This is a quest which gives skills depending on the professions you have when you do this quest. This quest is not doable again - this means if you do it and then later in the game change secondaries, you can't re-do this quest to get the skill it would give for your new secondary. The only way you can get that skill is by using a Skill Point at a Skill Trainer.

This is why people will generally play through with new characters... if they don't mind doing the main story again... and don't feel like grinding level's for skill points... because going through with a new character offer's skills via quest's that you won't be able to get when you swap secondaries. Am I being clear enough?

Well, not "quite a lot of quests" actually, just 4-5.
For each profession, there are 3-4 quests around Ascalon/Breach/Temple of Serenity, and there is one quest around Yak's.
According to my experience, you will end up with 14-16 skills of your new secondary.

All the rest must be bought. Which wasn't much of a problem so far since a lot of people change secondary for the purpose of being able to play a particular build.
Now, however, with the update coming on Wednesday, changing your secondary could turn into a somewhat costly affair.

I must admit that i completely fail to get the point in these announced changes: why should they make it easier to obtain a skill point while at the same time making it more expensive to use that skill point for what it's there for: buying a skill?

Since there's so much money floating around in the economy, I think ANet is looking for another gold sink. But then again, most of us who have the money already have all the skills unlocked.
